Every day the media discover new figures on obesity and overweight in children. Even in very young children, who normally have an easier time regulating their food intake naturally, the risk of obesity increases.
The data is that almost 7 percent of children between 3 and 5 years old are obese and 11 percent are overweight, percentages that progressively increase with age, reaching one of the highest rates of overweight and obesity in Spain child of the world. This study also reflects a survey on physical activity habits among children in which it shows, that although 65% practice some sport as an extracurricular activity, children from 3 to 5 years old do not usually do any physical activity after the school, not even the trips are usually made on foot, but by car, a decision taken in many cases by the daily rush.
According to experts, children's energy expenditure is well below calorie intake, so at these ages they recommend doing at least one hour of physical exercise a day to counteract a greater number of calories or reduce them. The doctor Rafael Casas, director and national coordinator of the Thao Program, has ensured that, to fight against childhood obesity, we must promote games in public spaces at the end of school, promote physical activity with the family on weekends and get enough sleep, since promoting good sleep habits will help our little ones to grow; since growth hormones are released during sleep and because, in addition, not sleeping enough hours (about 10 hours at these ages) can favor the appearance of obesity problems or aggravate them.
This is a sum and goes on, that although it should not obsess us, it should be instructive enough for parents to take action on the matter and take care of the health of our children.
